PURPOSE
It was only a matter of time before the Pipe range would entertain the inclusion of a twin fin. Beyond the fact that Twinny’s are making a comeback, it does also fit well with our core direction, and that is to offer alternative designs to those less led by fashion. This Twinny is labelled a Hybrid because it is consists of design features common in boards back in the 70’s as well as some modern stuff you will see in the very latest designs today. This marriage of concepts produces a board with speed, paddle and manoeuvrability.

PLAN SHAPE
For a start we have to know that the Twin Fin is the loosest board design known to man so taking that on board the planshape of this Twinny is centred on drive and hold. This is demonstrated by the widest point way forward allowing for a straightish back half running into a wide moon shaped swallow tail. This straight rail in the back half helps the board hug the face taking pressure off the fins (since there is only 2 of them) resulting in extra drive. Tri fins are a stiffer concept and need more planshape curve in the back half to compensate. The Hybrid Twinny as a result has the balance of drive and pivot pretty well sorted.
BOTTOM SHAPE
Perhaps the modernism in this board is reflected in the lateral bottom shape. Under the chest we have a 3mm concave then running into a longish vee with a double concave either side of the stringer.

ROCKER
The Rocker is lowish either end simply because no added rocker is needed because Twinny’s are super loose anyway and so drive is also gained with having less tail rocker.

PROFILE
The nose profile has the old traditional beak which puts more foam on the nose minimizing pearling and adding to paddle. Remember Twinnies will never feel front heavy as they go to rail so easily. In stark contradiction the foil out through the swallow tail is very fine which adds more bight that a widish tail needs for security through bottom turns particularly in the absence of a centre fin. The rails are full and boxy because they can be; meaning that since a Twinny goes to rail so freely a thicker rail can be buried with ease and this extra meat out wide also delivers more drive and forgiveness.

GLASSING
This is the first Pipe model glassed with a pigment with trim laps and finish coat polish. The Hybrid Twinny comes in 3 colours – Aqua, deep blue and bright red all bordered with a tapering white pinline. The glass is a 4x4x4 with toe patch on the rear deck and also a tail patch over the future boxes on the bottom to give them added base strength due to the pressure that large twin fins can put on the boxes to roll in the foam. A small fusion centre trailor fin box is positioned close to the big twinnies. As a designer I believe a twin fin is a twin fin so by placing the trailor position closer up to the big fins you will always know you are riding a twin fin so when a small trailor is in use it will help steady the skate, but will be always living in the shadow of its bigger brothers. I use the fusion box because the open gap when a trailor is not in use (which maybe most of the time) is minimized compared to a full empty future box. Lastly the choice of futures over other fin systems is purely because of the size of the fins needed. Futures sit inside the board and the whole base is immersed minimizing base roll and delivering more thrust through turns.
