LITTLE ORCA
The little Orca is a fish with a difference. Like its namesake it is black and white, but seldom eats whales.! It comes in small sizes and can be made extra-long if need be and all still will work the same i.e. fast and furious! This model is a brazen Twinny with a huge mono concave running two thirds of the board length up from the tail. The back half of this concave sits into a deepening vee which gives it more rail to rail twitch. Probably like nothing else on the market this thing is an excitement machine on steroids.
PLAN SHAPE
The outline of the Little Orca is pure fish as in the sense it sports a semi wide nose and quite a straight wave hugging outline centre to tail - resulting in a reasonably wide moon tail. The width of this tail with the massive lift of the concave needs to be held down at speed by a deep moon which in essence eliminates the surface area south of the fins and allows it to sit down so the fins can do their work. Additionally, the sharpened points of the moon on both sides act like horizontal fins by bighting like a Pit Bull- again increasing grip to the face.
ROCKER + BOTTOM SHAPE
Like all Twinnies the rocker is flattish, but from one third down from the nose the sudden scallop gouged out of the stringer of the bottom to create the mono concave that runs deep out the tail - actually in essence adds another half inch of tail lift on the stringer at the tail end. The bottom surface either side of the concave ending at the tip of the swallow points remains straightish rocker wise as intended, if you get my drift...? Either side where the fins are placed there is a deep vee into the rail edge to add some tilt to help control the massive lifting pressures of that deep concave. North of the mono concave the bottom has a very forgiving rolled vee into the nose so as to deal with the speed generated by the concave helping disperse chop much the same as a boat has a bow to alleviate and control forward pressures. East west action i.e. turning the board, is exaggerated by the
release edge of the mono concave that sits 3” in from the rail edge of the outline. This creates a lifting action which helps eliminating rail catching up front particularly when the nose lift is minimal. So, in effect the rocker and bottom shape of the Orca basically lifts it into Masarati status minus the brakes.
RAILS
Again, like all my twinnies the rails hold some more meat and are boxy in shape so as to generate more drive from a drive less fin combo i.e. only two fins. It is only when getting into the longer Orcas do I relent with this belief and make them a tad lower.
FINS
The amount of new fin designs coming out these days for Twinnies can be pretty confusing albeit they are all large coz they need to be. If you go for a more laid back keel type fin then go shorter in the board coz they stiffen the arc and vice versa the more common upright type like the MR template will deliver the shorter arc you would expect from a twinny and by all means go a tad longer if needed because you will never be compromised with only 2 fins under your hoof.
