Never have we ever seen so many versions of the new modern twin Fins, perhaps even more than the common thruster by now I would venture..? Their popularity has come about by the simple fact that so many middle aged surfers have hit the water for the first time and they make sense to them particularly because they, due to their inexperience, are forced to go longer to fast track good paddle but by the very nature of the Twinny are less affected by excess length.
The “Performance Twinny” is however not aimed at this market, quite the opposite in fact! The level of performance surfing these days has reached such heights that small twin fins can be pushed harder and can go places quicker than any other design if the surfer is good enough to stay attached. This is one of those boards.
PLAN SHAPE
The basic rule of thumb with any type of twin fin is more area forward. Because this model is meant to be ridden quite small, I have increased the nose width somewhat so to increase paddle and more importantly to allow it to be man handled to the extreme. The straighter outline from centre to tail is important to encourage more rail hug to the face because of the absence of a rear centre fin. Excess width in the tail is not really required particularly if the intent is to torture it through turns...! Also, the addition of a small fluted flyer, firstly narrows the pod even more, but the flute counters with extra lift and squirt, so nothing is lost with a smaller swallow, indeed it can be pushed even more.
BOTTOM ROCKER
Nothing really new here in that again the rule of thumb with all Twinnies is run baby run ! They do not need a lot of rocker since they are the loosest design there is.
LATERAL BOTTOM SHAPE
Here is where it gets interesting and we have seen the most experimentation with twins in this facet. The Performance Twin resists the temptation of including tail channels since this design is for 100% freedom and open to performing in all conditions clean or otherwise, small or large. The bottom shape is a single double concave forward and centre then enters into a vee with a double concave either side in the last third. Then add the thrust of the fluted wing to add insult and one wonders why guys need channels in these things. All in all this gives it both rail tilt and bottom squirt meaning encouragement to rail with a lot to be gained as far as speed in and out of turns. This thing just wants to go !
RAILS
Again, rule of thumb Twinnies work better with a bit of meat on rail since they swing so sharply and therefore need more forgiveness on the actual rail. It also gives them more drive something a Twinny naturally lacks. This model is no exception.
