The hydro Twin has been a staple in my range for over six or more years now, so I thought there was a good reason to tweak it even more since the idea is a keeper and the feedback has been overwhelming. The inclusion of a round tail on a twin fin was always resisted back in the day by the fear that a round tail on a Twin Fin would make the board way too loose.! After all the swallow on a twin fin was to give it some extra bight at the very end of the board as well as helping to facilitate a straighter outline from centre to tail so it would hug to the face better .
A round tail Twinny at that time was generally deemed a no-no.
Jump forward some 50 years and now it seems anything goes and round tail Twinnies are all the rage particularly in mid lengths with the idea that a round tail will make a longish twin fin feel shorter as they are so easy to turn. The dizziness of a round tail Twinny in shorter lengths which can be a problem for powerful surfers can be countered somewhat by running deep clinker channel out the tail, effectively adding a similar bight to a swallow tail, but with a smoother rotational feel that a round tail gives in spades.
PLANSHAPE
The outline of the Squirter model is basically the same as its brother- the Hydro swallow tail, only that in the last 16” the outline begins to curve into a round tail effectively narrowing the tail from there on and adding a more rotational feel to the pod. This feel as I have mentioned in the intro needs in my mind the added bight of tail channels to give it more cling and squirt. All Twin fin outlines need to be forward centric to maintain the drive they lost from sacrificing a middle rear fin. Also with the narrow pod and bighting effect of channels out the tail this board can handle bigger waves more comfortably than its barged arsed swallow tail brother.
BOTTOM ROCKER
As a rule most Twin Fin designs have a very flat rocker and the Hydro Squirter is no exception albeit there is a slight rise in tail lift in order to accommodate the exit of the channels, but it is quite minimal to say the least since the actual inclusion of the channels is to counter tail dizziness so tampering with too much tail lift would totally defeat the purpose.
LATERAL BOTTOM SHAPE
This is where for this model it is all going on.! The water entering from the nose of the Squirter destined to reach the tail does not realize what torture it is about to be put through..! Remember Twinnies are very fast off the mark as it is because of their wider nose, flatter rocker and their quickness to rail due to the absence of a dragging centre fin. In this case with the addition of the lifting effect of a three-quarter long cathedral hull, the whip of a round tail and the claw of the deep exiting channels this board is totally wired for speed off the block. With a slight point of difference the 4 tail channels run parallel to the direction that the fins are pointed meaning the channels are no longer parallel with the stringer as normal in the hope they will all work together in unison. Yes it is a complicated bottom shape and yes sanders run a mile when they see one coming their way, but production difficulties never ever simmered my lust to push boundaries..!
RAILS
As with most Twin fins the Squirter has a fullish rail purposed to resist being over buried in order to give it more downward drive. Because their axis swing is so tight due to only 2 fins doing all the work a fuller rail is another way to help them on their way so to speak.
