INTRO
The Next Gen Anti-Mal is basically a slight tweak
of a very successful model to date. The changes
are basically only adding more thickness forward
running into an old fashion beak at the nose. This
facilitates even more paddle to combat the fleets
of church doors proliferating our points more and
more these days. The volumes have increased
slightly and the numbers are reflected in the dims
table at the end of the model spiel. To add more
versatility a 10” fin box has been added allowing
the use of a deeper centre fin moved forward
when in 2+1 mode or indeed a slightly larger rear
centre fin in thruster mode. This will make the
design feel a little less front heavy since you will
be positioned slightly more forward.
PURPOSE
Perhaps the model’s name gives the purpose away, but
having said that the Anti Mal is a great alternative from
gravitating to the dark side when your body is
screaming for it! This model also sports a polystyrene
core adding to its paddle abilities. It will by no means
out paddle a Malibu, but it will run rings around them
like Drake did with the Spanish Gallions.
PLANSHAPE
Contrary to the nose area of a malibu, the AM has a
normal shortboard nose, albeit there is more area
forward of centre adding paddle, but keeping with a
much better swing rate. The addition of a 10” fin box
rather than a normal fixed position centre fin opens up
the opportunity to position yourself further forward
without tail slide by employing a slightly deeper centre
fin. Also, the use of a round tail adds extra ease when
rotating a somewhat lengthy board.
ROCKER
The AM has more nose lift than a Mal, but a lot less
than a big gun rocker – meaning it has some good
paddle in it from a rocker perspective. The tail lift
though, is extreme so as to take the pressure off the
flatter, but narrow nose from pearling. When the rider
gets to his feet, he can lift the nose by rocking back on
the tail. This extra tail rocker also loosens the board up
dramatically in larger waves as it does in small ones.
BOTTOM SHAPE
The AM has a con-vee bottom meaning it has a 3mm
concave through the guts running into a 3mm vee
through the fins and out the tail. The vee adds tilt
under the back foot facilitating tighter turns in a
longish board. The concave through the centre adds lift
and run under the front foot, not to mention additional
paddle under the chest. The deck is quite rolled in
order to keep a thick and longish board lower railed
and more sensitive in and out of turns.
GLASSING
The AM is a polystyrene core sporting a 3mm stringer
to add some backbone. To enable even more strength
and twang, 2 black carbon strips run longitude Ly down
the deck supported by a 4” carbon strip on the bottom.
The resin used is epoxy as it has to be on a polystyrene
blank. The idea is to get as much paddle as possible if it
is indeed to honour its name...!
FINS
The AM can be ridden as a quad or a thruster albeit
with a slightly deeper centre fin. Also, with the fin box
lends itself to a 2+1 mode in the right conditions.
