EPS 5 FIN STRINGERLESS FASHION VICTIM

The Fashion Victim is my new model designed to replace the Mojo that is being retired this year after a spectacular innings. There are distinct similarities in that they are both forward leaning 5 fin roundtails, but the Victim is perhaps a little more simplified. The title Fashion Victim is a pointed barb at the notion that I have designed this board to catch up with the current popularity of 5 fin roundtails when in fact I was one of the first to discover the benefits of quad finned round tails.

PURPOSE

The roundtail quads were a breakthrough solving the vertical stiffness of 4 fins on the rail. Quads had a problem when attempting to prize the board vertically at speed. They just wanted to hammer down the line. The round tail helped minimize this trait. Market demand has forced most designers to include a centre fin to give the board a thruster mode. Keeping the tail widths a little narrower allows this model to be ridden comfortably as a thruster in waves of less consequence.

PLANSHAPE

The Victim has more of a quad plan shape in that it has more area under the chest boosting paddle by a lot which means you can ride shorter since they paddle way better. This shortness means that the wider nose is closer to your pivot position over the fins making the board feel less front heavy and easier to pivot.

BOTTOM SHAPE

Besides the exclusion of the cathedral hull the Victim’s bottom shape is still the same as that of its predecessor. Sporting a 3 mm concave around the centre and fading into a subtle vee in the last 3 inches of the nose end. At the other end a long tail vee runs from tail tip and morphs into the central concave. This produces more speed and lift under the front foot and less lift and more control under the back foot.

ROCKER

The Victim has more nose lift than the Mojo because of the absence of the lifting hull, however by most standards it is still considered to have a lowish nose entry. The tail lift is moderate to suit both fin applications.

LAMINATING

The Fashion Victim being stringerless is strengthened with an 8 mm solid black carbon strip top and bottom. In addition the bottom is glassed with a 6 oz and the deck with an innegra biaxle inset plus a ¾ length 4 oz insert then a full wrap of another 4 oz. It is not going to break easy !
