This concept was something I had always wanted to try to design and now with the 3D design program I could put it together without wasting a blank like I did way back trying to design one. First and foremost, I wanted to massively thicken the back half of the board without it being felt in the rail back there. By employing a heavy roll on the deck in the tail area the rail thickness becomes more penetrable. Also, by employing a deep tail vee back there as well, helps to thin out the rail from the bottom up.

The front half of the board is totally the opposite in that it is deeply concaved on the deck and bottom right to the nose. This lateral shape delivers extra thickness to the rail whereas the stringer thickness is super fine because of the concave design effect. The ridgeline bordering the concave on the deck is nearly 3” in from the perimeter of the outline allowing the bevelled off rail to be lower and therefor more penetrable.

The super deep concave under the front foot on the deck allows for the balls of the feet i.e. the toe and heel, to have extra leverage as the deck rises up to meet them facilitating quicker and more powerful rail to rail tilt - helping to bury the thicker rails upfront. Remembering also this is a round tail quad meaning it will go to rail much easier than a tri fin anyways. Can’t wait to put this under someone’s feet…?

PLAN SHAPE
The Space Cadet is best described as egg like even though this warped rail concept could be employed into any plan shape. My thinking is to start with something easy to ride from an outline perspective so the egg shape keeps it simple. It also lent well into being a quad since they are not disadvantaged when sporting a wider nose. Also, due to the extremely thicker rail up front keeping this design on the shorter side would be beneficial .

ROCKER
Being an egg that sports a wider nose the nose entry is obviously best kept lowish. In addition, the deep concave right through the front half of the bottom also contributes to extra lift when in motion creating a lot more forgiveness when dropping in late. Tail lift is only moderate because the extra tilt with the deep vee encourages the board to rail easily, so no need for extra rocker to do the same thing through a turn. Remembering that quads are free on the face, especially round tails.

DECK + BOTTOM LATERAL SHAPE
As I described in the intro, this board is twisted! Particularly with how the bottom and deck shapes contort the rails. Perhaps the prime reason behind this design is to facilitate a really, really thick tail without hindering rail bight back there where it is always needed through turns to allow the fins to sit deep and do their thing. An extra thick tail will keep the board running since it will not be over submerged so when excess weight is applied in and out of turns the board will resist and run baby run! Add the quad mode to it, it’s going to run even more, which for close out beachies it should get some milage in before the inevitable…!
